Computers can be "stand-alone" machines, meaning that they are not connected to anything else. Indeed, many students tote around portable personal computers on thich they use the word processing or spreadsheet programs to help them with their work. However, the communications component of the computer system vastlly extends the rango of a computer. Indeed, the range is so many orders of magnitude larger than comprehending it is difficult.
